Where to go for a drink.

There's nothing quite like a dram or a pint at the end of a day on Skye. You'll find climbers' bars at the foot of the mountains with walls full of stories, old inns on the shore of quiet sea lochs, hotel bars in the middle of Portree and local pubs with music, quiz nights and pool. Many serve good, hearty food too, and most have a fine choice of island whisky and gin behind the bar. On a wet evening, there are few better places to be.

Charlie Haddock, the owner of the Stein Inn on Skye's Waternish peninsula, took over the 18th-century inn in 2019, and she runs it as a family affair.

Charlie works front of house, and her daughter helps out in the restaurant during the holidays. The inn has held its place in the village of Stein for centuries, and it has been modernised while staying full of character. In 2024 its five bedrooms were given a makeover, with charcoal tongue and groove and dreamy sea views from the window seats. Downstairs, the bar keeps its wood panelling, a fire and Scottish ales on tap, so there is somewhere cosy to settle after a day out on the peninsula.
