Isle of Arran
Stills at Lochranza and Kilmory.
Arran makes its whisky at each end of the island, and a visit to either is a fine way to spend an afternoon. At the head of the glen above Lochranza, a white still house with twin pagoda roofs has been distilling since 1995, with water that tumbles down from Loch na Davie. At Kilmory on the south coast, a newer distillery under a sedum roof makes a bold, peated single malt in the old Islay manner. Each has tours, tastings and a café, and the whisky bar at Kilmory looks out to Ailsa Craig. Book tours ahead in summer, and pick a driver before you set off.
