Stillhouses at Tomatin and Tain.
A distillery tour is the best way to see how whisky is made, and these take you right inside. South of Inverness, beside the A9, Tomatin has made Highland single malt since 1897 and runs guided tours from its visitor centre through the season. North of the city, by the Dornoch Firth outside Tain, Glenmorangie's tours show off its tall stills, with a shop to finish. Tomatin makes an easy break on the long drive north, and Glenmorangie pairs well with a day on the Tarbat peninsula. Book ahead, especially in summer, and bring a driver.
