Glasgow has been trading whisky for centuries, and now it makes its own. Visit the city's first single malt distillery in over a century, in a Victorian pumphouse on the Clyde. Or take the short trip north to a Highland distillery at the foot of the Campsie Fells, making an unpeated malt since 1833. Both run tours and tastings. The city's bars stock good malts too.

A great-grandson turned his ancestor's Glasgow pumphouse into a distillery.

John Morrison built the Queen's Dock pumphouse in 1877; his great-grandson Tim Morrison restored it and opened the Clydeside Distillery there in 2017, Glasgow's first single malt distillery in over a century.

The Clydeside Distillery's first single malt came out in October 2021.

The distillery on Stobcross Road released its first single malt on 15 October 2021. Called Stobcross, it is a marriage of bourbon and sherry casks, and is poured at the end of the tour.

The Valinch, a whisky and cask ale bar, has opened in a basement on Hope Street in Glasgow.

Thomas and Inga McDonagh, who ran the Bon Accord on North Street, opened it with around 300 whiskies on the gantry and a bottle shop.

At the Pot Still, a whisky bar on Hope Street in Glasgow, you could come in for 800 nights in a row and order a different whisky each time.

It was not always the Pot Still. The earliest records of the bar go back to 1867, when a wine and spirits merchant named John Hill ran it, and by 1886 a new owner had renamed it McCall's Bar. It stayed with the McCall family until Tennent's took it over in the 1960s, and in 1981, renamed the Pot Still, it became a family business again. The bar is still tucked behind a bottle-green, gold-lettered front, and if you are new to whisky, that is no problem: you will learn plenty from the folk behind the bar.

The Highland bar on Dumbarton Road is known for its whisky, its stained glass windows telling the story of the Clearances, and live traditional music on Monday nights.
