Fife's fishing villages have been landing fish and shellfish for centuries, and eating it close to where it came ashore is one of the best things to do here. On the East Neuk coast you can queue for fish and chips that have won national awards and eat them on the harbour wall. On a sunny afternoon you can also sit outside a lobster hut, with a crab or a lobster cooked a few steps from the boats. Bring an appetite, and check the opening days before you go, as some of the best places only open in the summer or at weekends.

Cromars Fish & Chips.

Since opening in 2013, this top-rate chippy has become a bona fide St Andrews institution, twice being named the best fish and chip shop in Scotland: the fish itself is landed at Peterhead, the spuds are grown in Fife, and the tartare sauce is homemade. There’s an outdoor area – as well as a beach a short walk away – and they even sell local beers and ales.

Robert and Alison Smith, who own Anstruther Fish Bar in the East Neuk of Fife, have centuries-old family ties to the East Neuk fishing trade.

That history is why their multi-award-winning fish and chip shop in Anstruther can fairly be called a labour of love. Haddock is the speciality, of course, but you will find dressed crab and more from the sea besides. Anstruther is the largest of the pretty East Neuk fishing villages, known for its colourful harbour fronts, its bobbing masts and its award-winning fish and chips. Take time, too, to visit the Scottish Fisheries Museum, home to an extensive collection of historic boats and seafaring paraphernalia.
