Dundee
Comic bronzes and Balgay Hill's dome.
Dundee wears its sense of humour in bronze. The city printed the Dandy and the Beano, and on the High Street a giant cowboy strides along with his dog while a tomboy takes aim with her catapult. Outside the art gallery, a spiky-haired boy sits on a wall with his pea shooter trained on Robert Burns, his upturned bucket beside him for a photograph. On the Nethergate, five bronze penguins line a church wall, dressed up for graduations and Christmas. Up on Balgay Hill, a white dome opened in 1935 as Britain's first purpose-built public observatory. Save the observatory for a clear evening in the dark months.
