Shore walks and a hill over the Solway.

Dumfries and Galloway is wonderful walking country. Climb the hill that stands over the Solway for views to the Lake District, or walk a circuit of Loch Ken where red kites are flying again. At Annan, a gentle shore walk passes the old port where emigrants once sailed. There's a cast-iron footbridge of 1813 over the Esk and trails that follow the legend of Merlin. Bring layers, as the wind off the Solway is fresh.

Duchess Bridge, at Langholm, crosses the River Esk in a single iron span of 104 feet.

The bridge was erected in 1813 and is described as an exceptionally fine and elegant iron footbridge. It is said to have been designed by William Keir the younger, Director of Works on the estate. The castings came from a foundry in Workington, and the bridge serves Langholm Lodge on the Buccleuch Estate.

The red kites over Galloway were brought back on purpose.

The species had been wiped out in Scotland. Between 2001 and 2005 about a hundred red kites were released at Bellymack Hill Farm, near Laurieston, and at the feeding station there today as many as a hundred birds come in over one field when the food goes out at two.
