Caithness

The herring town remembered.

Wick was once the busiest herring port in Europe, and its story is told with real affection in the town's heritage centre. Room after room is filled with fishing gear, recreated kitchens and shops, and a remarkable collection of photographs of the town and its harbour. Volunteers run it, and many have family stories to share. Allow a good couple of hours, as there is far more to see than you might expect.

Wick Heritage Centre, in the Caithness town of Wick, tells the story of a place whose fortunes rose and fell on the back of the herring industry.

The mid-19th century was a particular golden era for the herring trade in Wick, and the large museum does a brilliant job of recounting the tales behind the town, from household furnishings to a great many local photographs. The herring left its mark on the town's whisky too. Pulteney Distillery was created in the 1820s as a means of providing firewater for the many thirsty folk employed in the herring trade, and it still makes its Old Pulteney single malt, a heavy, fragrant dram. Book a tour there to get the full story, and a taste.
