Scotland to Build Its First Broch in 2,000 Years in Caithness
Planning permission has been granted for the construction of a replica Iron Age broch near Latheron, Caithness, marking the first new broch in Scotland in 2,000 years. Brochs are tall, double-walled drystone towers unique to Scotland, historically used as fortified dwellings. The Caithness Broch Project aims to use traditional building techniques to recreate the structure as an archaeological experiment. The project also envisions the broch as an eastern gateway to the Flow Country UNESCO World Heritage Site. The initiative has secured a site and landowner support but still requires funding for construction, which is expected to take several years.
