European eels are returning to a Scottish river after a decline of around 90 percent since 1970. Conservationists have been monitoring the species and improving habitats to support their recovery.

Efforts included removing barriers to migration, enhancing riverbanks, and improving water quality. Young eels have been spotted moving through the restored areas, a sign the work is paying off.

The species faces threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Experts hope the recovery in this river can serve as a model for protecting European eels across Scotland and Europe.
