Orkney Council has introduced Scotland’s first dedicated whale stranding protocol to ensure a coordinated response to beachings by whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

The protocol sets out procedures for immediate action, including public safety measures, reporting, and documenting incidents. It encourages collaboration with marine wildlife experts and conservation groups to assess the condition of stranded animals and decide on appropriate care or rescue.

The initiative aims to improve welfare outcomes for these marine mammals, support scientific research, and protect public health.
