After a devastating bird flu outbreak that struck Scotland’s seabirds (especially northern gannets on Bass Rock, once the world’s largest colony), there are now early signs of slow recovery.

Researchers have observed increasing bird numbers and are studying survivors to understand the virus’s long‑term effects, including changes in eye colour from vivid blue to black among recovered gannets.

Although overall breeding success remains below pre‑outbreak levels, scientists have found no difference in fertility between previously infected and uninfected birds, offering cautious hope. Conservationists continue collecting data to support seabird populations while monitoring ongoing threats like disease and environmental change.
