National Museums Scotland has acquired a set of rare Roman altars, ensuring the important archaeological objects remain in the national collection.

Discovered in East Lothian and dating from the Roman occupation, the carved stone altars shed light on religion and military life on the frontier of the Roman Empire.

Conservation work and research are now under way, and the altars are scheduled to go on public display in autumn 2026, when visitors will see them for the first time.
