A major new opera inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa premiered in Scotland in February 2026, bringing the life and artistic legacy of the Japanese master to the operatic stage.

The production, a collaboration between Scottish Opera and Japanese creatives, explores Hokusai’s creative journey, his pursuit of artistic perfection, and his bond with his daughter, who also became an artist.

It pairs Western orchestral drama with traditional Japanese music. It was staged in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
