The Western Isles are celebrating 40 years of Gaelic medium education (GME) with events under the banner GME@40, including exhibitions, performances, and storytelling.
Gaelic education began in August 1986 with a single unit in Breasclete, Lewis, serving just four pupils. Today, 759 students across the islands are taught through Gaelic, reflecting decades of growth and investment.
The celebrations, planned with local archives and cultural organisations, will highlight the history and achievements of GME. Local leaders say Gaelic education is a source of pride for island communities.
