The Oxford English Dictionary has officially added 13 distinct Scottish terms in its latest revision. Among those listed are “shoogly” (meaning unstable or wobbly, with usage dating back to 1822), “skooshy” (describing a squirtable cream), and “hoaching” (crowded or thronging, first recorded in 1797).

Also included: “beamer” for a flushed or embarrassed face, and “bummer” denoting an authoritative or pompous figure. Breakfast staples were recognised too (“tattie scone”, “square sausage”, “lorne sausage” and “morning roll”), along with the childhood snack “playpiece”.

The phrase “aye right”, conveying scepticism, was added as well.
