New research suggests numbers of the critically endangered flapper skate are beginning to recover in Scottish waters.

A study by Heriot-Watt University found commercial fishers are encountering the species more frequently, particularly along the west coast near Rum, Skye and in waters around Shetland.

The flapper skate is slow to mature and highly vulnerable, but protection measures introduced in 2009 appear to be working. Studies show higher survival rates within protected areas such as the Sound of Jura. Researchers say the species is recovering slowly and continued care is needed to support its long-term return.
