A critically endangered sea turtle of the Kemp’s ridley species is recovering in an aquarium after washing up on Sorabaidgh Beach on the Isle of Tiree. The small female turtle, measuring 36 cm and weighing 1.6 kg, was found by rangers in cold water shock, likely a result of extreme weather and being swept off course from its natural habitat in the Gulf of Mexico. She was transferred by ferry to a specialist aquarium at Loch Lomond for ongoing care. Kemp’s ridley turtles are the rarest species of sea turtle in the world, with only around 7,000 to 9,000 nesting females globally.
