In Glasgow’s city centre, excavations have revealed rare medieval remains beneath the Gallowgate area. Archaeologists uncovered pottery shards, upright wooden posts and fragments of woven fencing, 4.5 metres below modern street level.

The condition of wooden elements suggests the site was waterlogged, helping preserve them over centuries. The remains appear to trace early suburban structures, with arranged lines of posts hinting at divisions or enclosures.

The find was made during work to turn the Spoutmouth area into housing.
