An ash tree on Glasgow’s Argyle Street has been named the Woodland Trust’s Tree of the Year for 2025. Standing between busy tenements, it is the only tree on the block, surviving wartime bombing, redevelopment and the spread of ash dieback. Local arborist David Treanor nominated it for the award, supported by the surrounding community who see it as part of the city’s everyday landscape. The recognition follows Scotland’s win last year with the Skipinnish oak. The Argyle Street ash will now represent the United Kingdom in the European Tree of the Year competition taking place in 2026.
