Union Terrace Gardens nominated for major architecture award

Union Terrace Gardens, newly reopened in Aberdeen after years closed for regeneration, has been shortlisted for the 2025 RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.
The redesign by Stallan-Brand and LDA Design saw the gardens transformed into a welcoming civic space. It includes three pavilion-style buildings for a café, restaurant and wine bar, restored heritage features like statues, arcade arches and underground Victorian toilets, rebuilt steps, improved access and lush planting.
Residents praised the change for making green space more usable year-round.
The domed brick drum on the north bank of the Clyde, opposite the Radisson RED at the SEC campus, is to open again in May 2027 as The Rotunda and Roundhouse.
