A new all-electric “Seaglider” is being explored as a future transport option for the Highlands and Islands. The project is a collaboration between US firm Regent and the Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (Hitrans).

Regent’s Viceroy Seaglider can operate on water, skim on hydrofoils, or fly just above the surface at speeds of up to 180mph. Designed to carry 12 passengers and two crew, it has already attracted investment from Japan Airlines and Lockheed Martin.

Hitrans says the technology could transform travel between island and coastal communities, with feasibility studies planned and potential trials in Scotland being considered.
