At Eas Mor in the south of the Isle of Arran, a small wooden library has been recognised as one of the world’s top 20 libraries. Created in 2000 by Michael “Albert” Holmes, it houses thousands of handwritten notes from visitors and operates on a trust system for borrowing books.

Set in rewilded woodland with paths, waterfalls, and solar-powered facilities, the library promotes ecology and sustainable living. Visitors can contribute their own notes, enjoy wood-fired pizzas, and explore the forest.
