Eagle Rock, near the site of a Roman fort at Cramond in Edinburgh, offers one of the few visible traces of Roman occupation in Scotland. The fort, used from around 140 AD to the 3rd century, likely served as a harbour for garrisons along the Antonine Wall. Carved into the stone is a worn figure, thought to be an eagle, though some suggest it could represent Mercury or a Celtic deity. First recorded in 1794, the outline is faint but visible. The site is free to visit all year round.
