A Chilean flamingo chick has hatched at Edinburgh Zoo for the first time in nearly ten years. The chick, born on 4 September, joins the zoo’s existing flock, including Shrimpy, Louis and Rio, who are thought to have hatched in 1961. Chilean flamingos are classified as “near threatened” by the IUCN Red List and can live up to 50 years in captivity. To improve hatching success, keepers from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland temporarily move eggs from the nest to incubators before returning them to the flock.
