The hill

Bidein a' Choire Sheasgaich stands in the hills between Glen Carron and Loch Monar, beside Lurg Mhor.

Attadale Estate counts the two among the most remote peaks in Scotland. It describes this one as having a narrow rocky summit, and passes on the name the hill goes by locally, the "Cheese Grater".

The way in
The approach is long, and Attadale Estate recommends these hills for experienced walkers with a high level of fitness.
The top
Bidein has a narrow rocky summit.
Stalking
Attadale Estate stalks deer mainly from the third week of September until about 20 October, and asks walkers to keep off the high ground then. If you plan to climb the Munros in that time, contact the estate's stalker in advance on 01520 722308.
Weather and signal
The weather can change fast, and much of the estate is remote, with limited mobile signal.
Under snow
There is no avalanche forecast for this hill, but that does not mean there is no risk under snow. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service's full winter forecasts for its six areas begin on 17 December 2026.
Summit
Grid reference NH 049 412
Car park
As you turn into the estate from the A890, the walkers' car park is immediately on the right. If you stay out overnight, leave a note of your plans where it can be seen in the car.
Bothies
Attadale Estate keeps the Beinn Dronaig bothy, open most of the year but sometimes closed while deer are culled. Maol Bhuidhe is not available in the stag stalking season, and Bearnais is a single room shelter. Never plan a day that depends on a bothy.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NH 049 412
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
