Ben Vorlich

A Munro of 943 metres, number 229 of the 282.

The hill

Ben Vorlich, 943 metres, is the most northerly of the Arrochar Alps, above the west shore of Loch Lomond.

The park authority gives its name as Hill of the Bay.

Its top is a ridge running north to south with three small summits. There are two Munros of this name: the other is above Loch Earn.

The start
The park authority gives two starts on the A82: Ardlui, if you come by train or coach, and Inveruglas, by the Loch Sloy dam road. Take the route, distance and time from the route description and the map.
The top
Three small summits on one ridge. The trig point stands on the southern one, but the park authority says the central one is the highest.
Under snow
No avalanche forecast covers this hill, but that does not mean there is no risk under snow.
Deer and farming
The owners of the land you cross may be busy with deer management or other farming, and the park authority asks you to help keep disturbance to a minimum.
Summit
Grid reference NN 295 124
Car park
The park authority lists car parking at Inveruglas, on the A82.
Coach
Citylink coaches from Glasgow serve Ardlui, and there is a Citylink stop at Inveruglas. Check the times with the operators.
Toilets and food
Inveruglas has free toilets and a café. In 2026 the main toilet block opens from 8am to 8pm, and an outside block at all hours.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NN 295 124
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
