The Fannichs and Strathcarron

Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich

A Munro of 954 metres, number 208 of the 282.

The hill

Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich stands in the Fannichs, a range of the Northwest Highlands.

Its big neighbour is Sgurr Mor, under two kilometres to the west and more than 150 metres higher, and Meall Gorm is under three kilometres to the south.

The range gives its name to the Fannich Hills Site of Special Scientific Interest, and Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team covers these hills.

The ground
The Fannichs lie on private estates where deer are stalked. Follow any signs on the day.
Under snow
The Fannichs count only among the more outlying mountains of the Torridon avalanche forecast: its forecasters apply to them what they learn in the core of that area. Forecasts begin on 17 December 2026, and no forecast does not mean no risk.

Hydro works
In a booklet of 2005 on its Highland hydro sites, SSE Renewables welcomes visitors to its sites and to walk across its dams where they are safely open to the public, and asks everyone to respect locked gates and compounds and to heed warning signs and notices.

Going another day?

Choose the day you mean to climb.Near or far: the light you will have, and what the summit is likely to be doing.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NH 219 724
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
