The hill

Sgurr nan Clach Geala stands in the Fannichs, a range of the Northwest Highlands that Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team, which covers these hills, counts as a cluster of twelve peaks.

Among them is Sgurr Mor, the Big Peak, one of the highest in Northern Scotland.

Sgurr nan Clach Geala stands about two kilometres west of Sgurr Mor, with Sgurr nan Each under two kilometres to the south and Meall a' Chrasgaidh about the same distance to the north.

The range lies on the ground of several private estates, and Lochluichart Estate notes that the Fannich Hills are a special area of conservation.

The ground
The Fannichs lie on private estates where deer are stalked. Follow any signs on the day.
Under snow
The Fannichs count only among the more outlying mountains of the Torridon avalanche forecast: its forecasters apply to them what they learn in the core of that area. Forecasts begin on 17 December 2026, and no forecast does not mean no risk.
Summit
Grid reference NH 184 714
Bothy
There is no Mountain Bothies Association bothy in the Fannichs.

Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NH 184 714
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
