A small pink cottage sits isolated on a loch shore beneath layered mist and hills in Ross and Cromarty.
Ross and Cromarty

Loch Glass

A long, quiet loch in the hills above Evanton, below Ben Wyvis, reached by a walk along an estate track to a lonely pink house on its shore.

Welcome

Behind Evanton, a narrow road climbs for five and a half miles into the hills and stops at a gate.

Visited and photographed by Simon Hird

Beyond it lies Loch Glass, long and still under the great bulk of Ben Wyvis, with hardly a building in sight. Hardly, because on its shore, at the end of a track, stands a house painted bright pink.

It looks like the setting for a story, and it has become one: the house and the loch appeared in the finale of the first series of The Traitors. Yet no one has ever lived in it. It stands empty, a pink shell among the brown grasses and the water.

The walk to it from the parking place by Eileanach Lodge is about three and a half miles there and back, on an easy estate track through tall old pines and along the loch shore. On a day of low cloud, with the hills half hidden and the house reflected in the water, it is hard to forget.

The Daily for 29 October, from Scotland with love. An aerial view from a garden staircase looks down a formal garden's central path, statues and cherub urns lining the balustrade in the foreground.

The loch and the track can be walked at any time, free.

Drive the single-track Glenglass Road from Evanton to the parking space before the gate at Eileanach Lodge, then walk; it is about three and a half miles there and back to the Pink House.

Hidden Scotland

From our guide to Ross and Cromarty

Behind Evanton, a narrow road climbs into the hills and stops at a gate. Beyond lies Loch Glass, long and still under the bulk of Ben Wyvis, with hardly a building in sight. The exception is Culzie Lodge, a house on the shore painted bright pink. Fans of The Traitors will know it from the finale of the first series. The walk there and back from the parking place by Eileanach Lodge is about three and a half miles, on an easy estate track through tall old pines. On a day of low cloud, with the house reflected in the water, it is hard to forget.
