On Friday the 8th of August, Lochinver’s Culag Park hosts the Assynt Highland Games, starting at midday. Known locally as the “Friendly Games,” the event unfolds with heavy competitions—tossing cabers, weight-over-bar, tug-of-war—and athletic races including hill running. Piping, Highland dancing, solo events, wrestling and cycling feature alongside sport. Market stalls offer local food and crafts around the field’s perimeter. Competitors and bands process into the park ahead of each contest, and breaks allow prize-giving and community gathering. The day draws families, visitors and athletes from across Scotland, finishing with a closing march of pipe bands and dancers through the park.
