Shetland Islands
Whisky Lane malt and Unst gin.
Shetland has been making gin for a while, and its whisky is newer. In Lerwick, a distillery on Whisky Lane, just off Market Street, makes single malt at sixty degrees north, with its stills right in the middle of town. At the other end of the islands, on the old RAF site at Saxa Vord on Unst, the most northerly distillery in Britain makes Shetland Reel gin with botanicals that echo the island. Its tours end with a tasting. Book the tours and tastings on Unst ahead, and wrap a bottle well for the ferry home.
