Ross and Cromarty
Red sandstone of the bishops of Ross.
The medieval church left its mark on Ross and Cromarty in warm sandstone. In the middle of Fortrose, the ruin of the cathedral of the bishops of Ross stands in a quiet green square shaded by old trees. Its tall pointed arches, fine vaulting and fragments of window tracery hint at how grand the whole building once was. Out on the farmland of the Tarbat peninsula, the abbey church at Hill of Fearn goes back to the 1200s and is still the parish church, with roofless aisles and old gravestones around it. Bring a picnic for the square in Fortrose.
