Outlander's mill on the Tyne.
A few places around Edinburgh will look familiar to anyone who loves a period drama. On the River Tyne at East Linton, a red stone watermill with a curious conical roof stood in for the mill at Lallybroch in Outlander. Near Longniddry, a great neo-classical mansion by Robert Adam has a marble hall with a double staircase, open for guided tours on set days. At Bo'ness, on the Forth, volunteers run a heritage railway of steam and diesel trains, with Scotland's largest railway museum beside the station. Check the days before you go, as each keeps its own season.
