Things to do
in Lothian.
Gannets, saunas and a clifftop path.
The East Lothian coast is full of good things to do. From North Berwick harbour, boats sail round the Bass Rock, where the cliffs are white with gannets in summer, and on to the Isle of May on longer trips. On the clifftop above Quarrel Sands, two saunas with cold plunges look out to the rock. At Dunbar, a short path on the John Muir Way follows the cliffs from the harbour, past the castle, to the sands of Belhaven Bay. Book the boat and the sauna ahead, especially on summer weekends.
The Bass Rock, the island in the Firth of Forth off North Berwick, gave its name to the scientific name of which seabird?
The John Muir Way crosses Scotland coast to coast for 215km, from Helensburgh to Dunbar, the town where John Muir was born in 1838.
The route is named after Muir, the conservationist remembered as the founder of America's national parks, and the house he was born in is now a museum. The whole way takes nine to eleven days, and towards the end it follows the coast of East Lothian. Trains from Glasgow Queen Street reach Helensburgh, and trains from Edinburgh Waverley reach Dunbar. Cyclists need a sturdy mountain or hybrid bike, ideally with puncture-proof tyres.
