Old inns by the water.

Some of the best pubs on and around Skye have been pouring pints for a very long time. Expect real ales and whisky, a warm welcome and, in the best of them, tables right by the water on a sea loch or overlooking a ferry harbour. They're where locals, walkers and visitors all end up after a day out, and most cook hearty food using seafood and meat from close by. Book a table for dinner in summer, and settle in for the evening if the weather turns.

Charlie Haddock, the owner of the Stein Inn on Skye's Waternish peninsula, took over the 18th-century inn in 2019, and she runs it as a family affair.

Charlie works front of house, and her daughter helps out in the restaurant during the holidays. The inn has held its place in the village of Stein for centuries, and it has been modernised while staying full of character. In 2024 its five bedrooms were given a makeover, with charcoal tongue and groove and dreamy sea views from the window seats. Downstairs, the bar keeps its wood panelling, a fire and Scottish ales on tap, so there is somewhere cosy to settle after a day out on the peninsula.
