Isle of Skye

Otters, eagles and seals.

Skye is wonderful for wildlife, if you're patient. Otters hunt along the shores of the sea lochs, sea eagles and golden eagles soar over the cliffs and glens, and seals haul out on the rocks. A hide by the water, a long glen with no road down it, or a quiet loch beside the road can all reward an hour of watching. Go early or late in the day when it's quiet, bring binoculars and a flask, and keep your distance, especially from otters and nesting birds.

Calum Gillies, an artist who grew up on the Isle of Raasay, off Skye, says the best viewpoint on the island is Temptation Hill, behind Raasay House.

From the top, he says, there are 'amazing panoramas all the way up to the Old Man of Storr' across the water on Skye. The hill rises close to the walled garden, directly above the island's Pictish stone, and the climb to its summit is short, sharp and, yes, tempting. The view runs down towards a hidden beach and out across the Sound of Raasay. Calum runs The Exchange, a small gallery and coffee stop in the old telephone exchange at Clachan, with his wife Leonie, and he says Raasay may be small, but it is worth the 25-minute crossing.

Under the Skye Bridge at Kyleakin, the little island of Eilean Bàn was the last home of Gavin Maxwell, the naturalist who wrote Ring of Bright Water.

Maxwell lived on the island from January 1968 until his death in September 1969, and part of the lighthouse cottage is now a museum to him. The lighthouse itself was built by David Stevenson in 1857. The Eilean Bàn Trust runs the island, and its tours take in the museum, the lighthouse and the wildlife hides, with herons and seals about and, with luck, an otter in the water. Tours are booked ahead by email or phone.
