From the Ness Islands to Invergordon's gables.

Walking here can mean an hour by a river or a week down a glen. In Inverness, a riverside loop runs from the castle along Ness Bank to the wooded Ness Islands and back past the cathedral, about three miles in all. The Great Glen Way is the long one, 79 miles from Fort William to Inverness along the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness. Up in Easter Ross, the gable walls of Invergordon carry large murals telling the town's story, and the trail round them is free and open every day. Pack a light waterproof, whichever you choose.

Andrew Cowderoy, who runs Boath Cabin near Nairn, says the place to go on a rainy day is Culbin Forest, where the Scots pines give shelter from wind, rain and snow.

He suggests going in through Kingsteps, where the trails are great for family walks or a quick 5K run. Culbin was once shifting sand dunes and is now a vast pine plantation, and the highlight is climbing the tower at Hill 99 for sweeping views across the treetops to the sandbanks. Nairn Beach, a short drive from the cabin, is good in most weather, with a splash pad for children nearby in summer, and at Brodie Castle the Playful Garden Café has soft play and good coffee. 'These places are beloved by locals, simple, restorative, and easy to enjoy during your stay'.

In the tropical glasshouse at Inverness Botanic Gardens you can sit beneath banana and cabbage palms and watch koi beside a waterfall.

The gardens stand just back from the River Ness, once known as the Floral Hall, and their warm glasshouses shelter tropical blooms and cacti from the cold Highland air. Cameron Hall-Gardiner, who started out as an arborist on the Ness Islands next door, reaches them over the Victorian iron bridge on his favourite walk through the city, and calls them a dear and personal oasis. 'It contains a modest tropical glasshouse with temperatures to suit'. Outside, the gardens offer colour and life in every season, with peaceful benches for sitting a while.
