Glasgow

Riverside paths and painted walls.

Glasgow is a great city on foot. Follow the Clyde Walkway out of the city centre and along the river, all the way to New Lanark if you have the legs. Or stay in town and follow the mural trail, a walk round giant paintings on gable ends and back lanes, from a girl with a magnifying glass to St Mungo himself. Both are free, and both show the city at its best.

Inside Govan Old Parish Church, on the south bank of the Clyde in Glasgow, is a carved stone sarcophagus said to be the only one of its kind from pre-Norman northern Britain.

It is the centrepiece of the Govan Stones, a collection of 31 medieval recumbent gravestones, made to lie flat, five hogback stones and the sarcophagus itself, all rescued from the church grounds in 1926. Hogbacks are heavy ridged stones shaped like the roofs of houses. The stones are believed to date from the 9th to 11th centuries, when Govan was a great church of the Kingdom of Strathclyde. The sarcophagus is carved from solid stone and covered in intricate carvings, so take your time as you walk round and look closely.
