Easter Ross

Shandwick sand and Ardmair shingle.

The beaches here sit on two very different coasts. On the Moray Firth, a long bay of pale sand runs out from the Seaboard villages, backed by dunes and marram grass. Its Norse name, Sand-Vik, means sand bay, and a short walk up the hill brings you to a great Pictish cross-slab in its glass shelter. Across the country in Wester Ross, near Ullapool, a curve of grey shingle sweeps round Loch Kanaird under the dark wall of Ben More Coigach, with Isle Martin out in the water. Stay for the sunset in the west, and bring a warm layer for the wind.
