Argyll and Bute

Rhododendrons by the sea lochs.

The mild west coast air makes Argyll a wonderful place for gardens. There's the Royal Botanic Garden's mountainside garden in Cowal, entered by an avenue of giant redwoods, and a Himalayan-style woodland garden in a gorge by Loch Fyne. On a promontory over the Sound of Jura, a garden begun in 1898 is famous for its rhododendrons. On Mull and Ulva, small gardens grow right down to the shore. Visit in May.
