Aberdeenshire

Lights on the north-east shoulder.

The north-east coast juts out into the North Sea, and its lighthouses have kept ships off its rocks for two centuries. There's a red-and-white tower by Robert Stevenson near the most easterly point of mainland Scotland, and a lighthouse off a wild headland with miles of empty dunes. At Fraserburgh, a museum keeps the first light, lit on top of an old castle. Above Aberdeen harbour, an old artillery fort is a good place to watch for dolphins.
