Aberdeenshire

Seals, terns and red deer.

Aberdeenshire is rich in wildlife. On the coast, a nature reserve of huge sand dunes is home to seals, nesting terns and eider ducks, with the remains of a medieval village buried in the sand. Inland near Alford, a working red deer farm offers guided tours where you can meet the herd, rare white deer among them. Bring binoculars, keep to the paths in the nesting season, and keep dogs on a lead near the birds.
