Wallace Mural

Two huge gable murals of William Wallace, painted in 2023 in a small space at the top of Castlegate in Lanark, said to be where Wallace and Marion Braidfute lived.

Welcome

At the top of Castlegate in Lanark, a narrow gap between two tall buildings has been turned into a small memorial to William Wallace.

The spot is said to be where the town house of Marion Braidfute's father stood, and where Marion and Wallace made their home.

In 2023 the artist Rogue-One painted the two tall gables above it with huge murals. On one, Wallace storms Lanark Castle, where he killed the English sheriff Haselrigg. On the other, he and his men rest by the Clyde as new followers flock to join them.

The space was created by the Lanark Community Development Trust, with a poem by Les Hunter, a cartoon strip by Kate Sheppard telling Wallace's story, and a specially made Wallace sword.
