Welcome

In Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town, the Open Book is a small bookshop with a twist.

Upstairs is a holiday flat, and whoever stays there also runs the shop below for the length of their visit.

That means the bookseller behind the counter changes from one stay to the next, each bringing their own way of arranging the shelves and welcoming customers. Guest booksellers call it a unique experience, and shoppers have praised the warm welcome and the care taken in choosing books for them.

The shop usually opens from 8am to 4pm on weekdays and from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, though hours can vary with each week's bookseller.

Hidden Scotland, the magazine

Scotland, in print.

We want to show you the best that Scotland has to offer. The makers and the creatives, the enduring experiences, the evocative tales, the concealed corners. The roads less travelled that take you to places that matter. The adventures that gather you up and sweep you away. The blend of the wild and the artistic that makes Scotland what it is. We’d love for you to join us.
