Carnoustie Golf Links – The Burnside, Where Hogan Qualified

A day.

The route

The Burnside is the links beside Carnoustie's Championship course, and Ben Hogan qualified for the 1953 Open here with a 70, the year he won it.

It plays to a par of 68, and the Barry Burn comes into play more than once. Afterwards, lunch is upstairs in Links House, looking out over the links to the sea.

Before you go

  1. Book Carnoustie Golf Links

    An attraction

Links House on Links Parade has the changing rooms, the professional shop and a kiosk. At the 5th, Burn, a par 3, the Barry Burn runs round three sides of the green, and the 17th, Sinkies, crosses the burn twice. From 1 November to 31 March the Burnside is one of the two courses in winter play, off mats the club provides, sometimes shortened and on winter greens after a frost. The handicap limit is 28 for men and 36 for women, and a group of fewer than four may be joined up with others. Wear a collared shirt or other golf shirt; blue denim and tracksuits are not allowed. The links are public land, so watch for walkers and dogs crossing. Lunch is upstairs at The Rookery, the links' own restaurant, by the lift in the atrium, with views over the course to the sea; the club recommends booking a table before or after a round, on 01241 802296. Last winter The Rookery was shut on Mondays and Tuesdays, so ring for this winter's hours before planning lunch there.

If it rains

When heavy rain is due the club moves the holes to higher ground, and it may hold starts for up to an hour. Links House is under cover.
