Mad as a March Hare
A farmer follows his wife into the woods each spring, and finds a hare instead.
Words by Morvern Graham
In the rich farmlands and rolling hills of East Scotland, there once lived a young woman named Hester and her husband Angus. They owned a small patch of land from which they grew food to fill their bellies, and sold the surplus to the locals for a fair price. Hester was an expert grower of herbs and medicines, and their house was often visited by folk with ailments or sickness, which Hester would treat with powerful infusions or perhaps the occasional spell.
During the day, when her husband was tending to the fields of crops and vegetables, Hester would go wandering off into the surrounding woodlands. Often she’d be gone all day, disappearing at sunrise and returning again long after the sun had set.
